Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. Rare First Edition (First Published in 1979 in Great Britain by Frank Cass and Company). Signed and inscribed by the editor Sister Mary Noel Menezes ('1st December1979, To dear Sister M. Thomoz (?), With the warmest of wishes, S.M. Noel Menezes'. The signed inscription is on the first front end paper. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this book for sale anywhere on the Internet (I think it may also be the Only original book, signed or unsigned, for sale on the Internet). You can see the covers in the photographs provided. They are quite clean (there are two tiny spots near the top edge of the front. The covers have only minor wear, creases at the corners and at the bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The edges are in very good condition. The corners, though bumped, do not have any rubbing or rub-through. This book is square, straight, and very solidly bound, absolutely no issues in that regard. The pages are tight throughout and they are exceptionally clean. Even the inside covers and endpapers show no soiling at all. I'm scrolling through the pages now, all 314 of them, and I'm not seeing any instances of soiling. These pages are also in very good condition. I'm not seeing any creasing or dogeared corners. The only flaw is minor: there is a tiny bump/scuff to the middle page edge near the bottom. It has caused a little squinching nick over a 1/16th of an inch of the edge of only two or three pages, including the signed first front end paper. The book has a frontispiece map of British Guiana which is in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photographs. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book. I'm going to remove it to scan the photographs. Afterward I'll replace it with a new fitted protective cover. Removing the cover helps you and me to more easily see any imperfections. The protective covers generally improves the appearance of the jacket. So, what I'm seeing is a jacket in very good condition. It is not clipped. The flaps are very clean. The rest of the jacket is very clean. The only wear I see are a few light creases, also a speck-sized scuff near the bottom edge of the spine. At the time of the publishing of this book Sister Mary Noel Menezes was the Senior Lecturer in History and the Head of the Department of History, at the University of Guyana. A colleague wrote of her 'There was a time when the History Department of the University of Guyana (UG) was among the best in the Caribbean. This was in the seventies when the quality of teaching and research was to be envied. One of the leaders that helped the department to reach such great heights was Professor Mary Noel Menezes.' From the front flap of the dust jacket 'These are documentary texts from the study of the Amerindians of British Guiana in the nineteenth century. They have been compiled from primary sources which include letters from various Governors of British Guiana and Secretaries of State, and reports from the Protectors of the Indians, the Superintendents of Rivers and Creeks, missionaries, travelers, etc. These selected documents reveal the history of a culture shock, of the reaction and responses of the Amerindians to European values. The Indian himself was classified as 'an ignorant, untamed savage'.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
