Hard cover dust wrapper, large octavo, xxxvii/354pp, b&w illustrations and photos. Edges of dust wrapper and boards worn, top corners of boards bumped; a good copy. "The True Story of Andersonville Military Prison as told in the personal recollections of John McElroy, sometime private, Co. L, Illinois Cavalry." McElroy was a journalist for the Toledo Blade who enlisted in Company L, 16th Illinois Cavalry. He, with a detachment of his regiment, was guarding a supply route to Cumberland Gap when his entire company was captured in a surprise attack one morning during the winter of 1862-63. He and his comrades were taken to Lippy Prison, and from there they were sent to Andersonville as the first contingent of Union prisoners to become confined there. McElroy spent the rest of the war as a prisoner. His story is one of attempts to escape, of comrades tracked through swamps by packs of dogs, and of the everyday struggle just to stay alive. Andersonville saw 41,000 Union soldiers come into its confines as prisoners, who had to survive without shelter and little food. Confederate Captain Henri Wirz, commandant of Andersonville, was later tried by a military tribunal and hanged for war crimes.
