Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Printing. 1st printing. Very light general wear. 1987 Trade Paperback. xii, 339 pp. "During separations enforced by the military, Lieutenant General George A. Custer and his wife, Elizabeth, corresponded about the Civil War, the perils of frontier life, and the chain of events that would lead to his tragic death at the Little Big Horn in Montana Territory. Their letters reveal the nuances of personal and political loyalties rarely expressed by historians and novelists. And they reveal a devotion rare among wartime marriages. He was her "Autie," her "Darling Boy," and she was his "Libbie," his "Darling Sunbeam." When Elizabeth Custer died in 1933, after fifty-seven years of widowhood, she left behind these treasured letters. Her friend and literary executor, Marguerite Merington, edited them, adding related materials and a thread of narrative reaching from Custer's birth on an Ohio farm to the final fury at the Little Big Horn.

Hardcover. Condition: COLLECTIBLE - NEW. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition, First Pinting. BRAND NEW & Collectible. First published 1950; this is a reissue of 1994. Primary reference/resource. Anthology of letters exchanged between General George Armstrong Custer (1839 - 1876) and his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer (1842 - 1933). General Custer was one of the youngest generals (1863) in the Union Army; he knew fine hours in the Civil War which were eclipsed from popular memories by his defeat and death by Sioux Indians Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull at the Battle of the Little Bighorn (1876), immortalized by the still ubiquitous phrase, "Custer's Last Stand." After his death, Mrs. Custer was advocate for her husband's legacy through books and lectures. Their letters are not only revealing of Custer's confrontation with Pickett, Stuart and other Southern leaders, postwar attempts to suppress carpet-baggers, and last stand at Big Horn, but also of Elizabeth Bascon Custer's views.
