PROVENANCE: Francis Augustus Brooks M.D. Le lieutenant-colonel Brooks a obtenu son diplôme en médecine en 1888, après avoir suivi sa formation de médecin à l?Hôpital St. Mary?s de Paddington. Ce livre fait partie de la série des grands in-folio illustrés par Doré, qui comprend La Sainte Bible, l?ouvrage du Dante, Les Fables de La Fontaine (1877), L'Espagne du baron Davillier (1874), Londres de Louis Énault (1876), Roland furieux de l'Arioste (1888). C?est grâce à l?ouvrage de J. F. Michaud que les croisades ont entrées dans le domaine de l'histoire scientifique. La premiere édition a été publié dans les années 1812-1822, en trois volumes. C?est en 1877 que Gustave Doré donnait à l'ouvrage de Michaud un éclat nouveau par une édition illustrée de cent gravures à pleine page ; La revue Le Correspondant (25 déc. 1876, pg 1128 - 1131) a consacré une analyse détaillée du ce livre, et voici ce qu?elle dit en regardant l?effort artistique du Dore : " Au point de vue de l'érudition et du style l'Histoire des Croisades est considéré comme une ?uvre monumentale, et à ce titre, elle réclamait des illustrations spéciales. Aucun artiste ne semblait plus apte à ce genre de travail que Gustave Doré (.) On dit que Gustave Doré, en étudiant l'histoire de Michaud, avait trouvé quatre cents sujets dignes de son crayon ; il n'en a traité que cent, choisis parmi les plus séduisants et les plus dramatiques, et dont il a fait autant d'émouvants tableaux. Il faudrait presque citer et décrire chacune de ces belles compositions, où la puissance, la grâce, la science du détail, les qualités les plus attachantes et les plus variées, se font admirer tour à tour (.) With one hundred plates from various engravers, including Bellenger, Doms, Gusman, Jonnard, Pannemaker, Pisan, Quesnel. Each plate features a tissue guard with extended caption in red. This is the first illustrated translation into English. Covers detached and backing missing on both volumes, covers with old burgundy colored cloth tape that was used to attach covers to spine area. All preliminary and last papers present with some having edge wear, front flyleaves of both volumes detached, rear flyleaf of Vol I with a diagonal crease. All engravings and tissue guards present and in very nice condition with the frontispiece guard of Volume I having a 1 3/4" edge tear. Internally these volumes are very clean and tight and worthy of a restoration. Volume I 362 pages Volume II 364 pages. PayPal accepted.
