Hardback: 8" x 5". Condition: USED_VERYGOOD. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Cover Art: Mike Codd (illustrator). UK SFBC Edition. © 1975: A stand-alone novel by Kit Pedler & Gerry Davis. 1st printing of 1976 edition. SFBC #1112:- Synopsis: The time is the end of the century, and the earth at last has exhausted its supplies of fuel. The last oil and col have been consumed, nuclear fission abandoned after a series of catastrophic accidents. The final hope is nuclear fusion, using the power of the sun - but there is a problem to solve. The stable magnetic field within which the fusion must take place cannot be created within the influence of the earth's gravity. It must be done in space. So the 'last space flight' - space ventures are now prohibitively expensive of fuel and resources - is launched to construct a giant reactor in space, Dynostar. Successive teams of hand picked astronauts and scientists man the space-lab, and they are on the verge of their first fusion operation when the earth's supreme ecological authority - the all-powerful Council of Twelve - commands abandonment of the project. It seems there is a danger that the Dynostar project may disrupt the ozone layer of the earth's atmosphere and burn up huge areas of the planet's surface. The shutdown order, however, is followed by a series of sensational events in space. Three scientists die mysteriously - due apparently to an impossible technical failure. An engineer member of the relief team tries to cut off the reactor's automatic countdown - and dies from plutonium exposure. The fear begins to grow that Dynostar's automated programme cannot now be halted; and the suspicion spreads, on board the laboratory as among the directors back on earth, that there is a saboteur on the spacecraft. And if so, who is it? And why is he prepared to murder, even perhaps die himself, rather than let the project come to a halt. As one death follows another in the tiny community, a race against time develops among the experts on the ground and the exhausted men in space to find a way of shutting down Dynostar and identifying the saboteur before disaster envelops everybody:- Review(s): "Kit Pedler & Gerry Davis, creators of the 'Doomwatch' series, have a way of making technology an irresistibly exciting element in the suspense of their space thrillers, without drowning their story in technical jargon. 'The Dynostar Menace' is an immensely gripping and satisfying book, in which new twists of plot and imagination take the reader by surprise up to the very last pages:- (original cost unmarked).
