Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Hester, Paul (photographer) (illustrator). OUR ANCESTORS' GRAVES: HOUSTON'S HISTORIC CEMETERIES, Douglas Milburn, photographs by Paul Hester, softcover, 1980. ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library item or remainder. The wraps are in very good condition (fingerprint smudges on glossy paper in a few places). 11 x 8 1/2, 28 pages, 8 ounces XX Houston frequently seems to be a city in a race with Time itself to see which can reach the Future first. And often it is hard to find physical links with the past here. Buildings which date from the first decades of the city's founding have all but disappeared. In their places are only state historical markers to remind us that once fellow Houstonians lived, worked, played, and prayed on the spots we frequently pass. It is Houston's cemeteries, the final resting places for our ancestors, those famous and not-so-famous citizens who have preceded us, that form a real connection with our past. The locations and sizes of Houston's oldest cemeteries tell us much about how this city grew and changed. The names and histories of the thousands of individuals buried there tell us even more. They help chart a social and cultural history for Houston, a history of how the efforts of Mexican Americans, Blacks, and Anglos have helped make Houston the city it is today. Houston's oldest cemeteries have a large number of stories to tell. The record of the move of Mexican Americans to Houston is preserved in older cemeteries like Magnolia and in newer locations like Morales and Holy Cross. At Glendale, the oldest "preserved" cemetery in Houston, the visitor is placed in contact with the first Anglo settlers of this area. Others, like Glenwood or Evergreen, provide a visible record of how the "park-like cemetery," a tradition best expressed in Mt. Auburn in Cambridge, Massachusetts or Greenwood in Brooklyn, New York, was transported to Houston to create beautiful resting places for the dead and locations for meditation and pleasure for the living. And finally, in cemeteries like College Park or Olivewood, the dedicated searcher can find, amidst the jungle-like vegetation that now fills these locations, the graves of Houston's first generation of freed Blacks. Contents: Our Ancestors? Graves, Diversity, Living with Cemeteries, Houston's Historic Cemeteries, The Cemeteries, Lost Cemeteries, A Map of Houston's Historic Cemeteries, Exploring the Cemeteries, A Typical Old Cemetery, Restoring an Old Cemetery, Photographs: Historic Houston Cemeteries: Evergreen, Evergreen Negro, Forest Park, Founders', Glendale, Glenwood, Harrisburg, Hebrew Cemeteries, Hollywood, Holy Cross, Magnolia, Morales, St. John's Evangelical, Washington, Westcott.
