The American Philatelist is the oldest continuously published philatelic journal in the world, the first issue having appeared in January 1887. The magazine is published monthly for members of the American Philatelic Society. It has the appearance of a standard glossy color magazine, typically running about 100 pages per issue. As the house organ, there are monthly departments covering American Philatelic Society news and activities, a president's column, and other articles specific to the Society itself. The core of the magazine consists of 5-10 articles on subjects related to philately. All of its articles feature color illustrations, graphs and charts. This issue contains the following articles: "State of the Hobby: Hey! Don't Call Me a Stamp Collector!" by Peter Adgie; "The First Christmas Card" by Michael Peach; "Tea in History and Stamps" by Barbara M. Soper; "Walter Arndt Elected Postmaster of the McDonald Territory" (private dispatch stamps of McDonald County, Missouri, 1961) by Dr. Robert Crossman; "The $1 Airlift Stamp of 1968 in Historical Perspective" by Ken Lawrence; "'The Drink That Made Milwaukee Famous': A Philatelic Mystery" (Schitz Brewery advertising covers) by Bob Baldridge; "Reunion Overprinted Varieties" by Felix Mille; "Pleasant Plain, Ohio" by Paul J. Phillips; "Detention of 'Enemy Aliens'" ('Free Civil Internee's Mail' from Ellis Island in 1947) by Richard Sheaff; "Collecting Coast to Coast: True Photostamps Date Back Beyond 2004" (Personalized, self-adhesive stamps) by Wayne Youngblood; Worldwide in a Nutshell: French Polynesia" by Bob Lamb.
