Guste spent most of his career as a pastor in several New Orleans parishes, but developed a broad reputation for his extra-parish work that reached Catholics in many other settings. Although he trained as a priest in the pre-Vatican II Catholic church, he was an early enthusiast of the Catholic charismatic movement, an energetic â" some critics at first thought disruptive â" grassroots spirituality that brought phenomena like praying in tongues into the Catholic church. He also devoted years of work to the anti-abortion movement, not as a street or political activist, but preaching it as a justice issue before church audiences. The Rev. Pat Williams, the archdioceseâs director of priest personnel, said Msgr. Gusteâs talent was preaching and writing on Catholic spirituality, which he continued through retreats and conferences well into what passed for retirement, which nominally occurred in 2001. He was the author of several books, including âThe Gift of the Churchâ and âKatrina, Rita and God.â.
