In 1863, the Namamugi incident occurred, in which the English admiral Kuper bombarded the city in retaliation for the murder of the merchant Richardson. The Shimazu clan was one of the major opponents of the Tokugawa and, after the Meiji restoration, provided important politicians, including: a. Saig_ Takamori and _kubo Toshimichi. In 1877 the city became the center of the Satsuma rebellion. After eight months of fighting, the city was almost completely burned down, and the castle was also destroyed. Saigo, the leader of the rebellion, committed suicide.
