These operations are not particularly difficult, but their proper execution calls for a good knowledge of surgical anatomy and for skill in the special techniques which under certain conditions may prove not only useful but essential. This skill is based on experience, for the latter is not easily acquired, in as much as surgical nerve lesions are not very common and, furthermore, are on different occasions dealt with by general surgeons, neurosurgeons, as well as by orthopaedic and plastic surgeons. Adequate individual experience is thus difficult to come by. As we ourselves know only too well, in exposure of nerves which are rarely subject to surgical intervention this lack of practice may prove a source of some embarrassment and no little difficulty. Under the circumstances a search in the library is not always practicable or rewarding and thus a reference text providing individual descriptions of exposure techniques for all spinal nerves was deemed to meet a real need. However, soon after embarking on the preparation of the text we had to recognize that by adhering to our original objective we would produce only a very incomplete guide to the surgery of nerves, limited to a single aspect of the subject which, though important, is not decisive ae regards the essential scope of the intervention, i.e. the restoration of function.
