Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Louis Agassiz Fuertes, Anne C. Stryke and Verne Morton (illustrator). 1st Edition. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR (presumably) on the front free endpaper as follows: ¿To dear Valerie Margaret | from Aunt Katherine.¿ Oblong 4to. 76p. Profusely illustrated with black and white drawings by Louis Agassiz Fuertes and Anne C. Stryke and with black and white photos by Verne Morton, all captioned with lyrics from the music, as well as numerous musical scores. Black and white photo pictorial endpapers. Grey paper over boards printed and deocrated in black with a vignette in black on the front cover of a bird sitting on the branch of a flowering shrub and with a black cloth spine. Some wear to extremities with the corners just bared worn through, small chip out of the leading edge of the paper on the front cover, covers lightly soiled, black cloth spine very slightly faded, all illustrations and photos in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. The music in this volume was written by Katherine Creighton at the request of Anna Botsford Comstock of the Nature-Study Laboratory, Cornell University. Comstock says of Creighton¿s composition of this music, ¿Her poetic feeling and powers of express, her experience as a teacher, her understanding of children, and above all, her love of Nature have all fitted her eminently for this task.¿ Creighton also wrote The Elves of Mt. Fern (Philadelphia, 1922). The bird drawings in this book are by the most eminent American bird artist, Louis Agassiz Fuertes, the insect drawings by Anne C. Stryke, and the Nature photographs by Verne Morton. A very unusual children's book combining music, nature and art.
