    Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Ex-library. Publisher's original binding in crimson cloth with gilt lettering on spine and blind stamped boards. Heads of spines are chipped. Library label and bookplate on front pastedown of Vol. I. Each volume has pinhole library stamps on their title page plus one additional leaf. No pockets. Four engraved plates with tissue guards (including the frontispieces). Fourteen in-text woodcut illustrations. Several examples of Jewish music. 8vo. pp. xv, [1], 438; xvi, [1],437. 8.75 x 5.3 inches. Placed in a removable, clear archival sleeve with a small, loose slip of acid-free, color-matched paper to mask the call number. A Pilgrimage to the Land of My Fathers is a record of travels and observations in a series of letters written between 1847 and 1849. Volume I covers London, France, Italy, Malta, Carthage, and Tunis. Volume II: North African ports, Constantinople, Rhodes, Lebanon, Syria, Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Margoliouth describes the character and relations of the Jewish communities in many of these places in Europe and the Levant, including the Karaite Jews and Jewish converts to Christianity, notes British and Christian missions, documents contemporary and historical events, meets with common and prominent individuals, provides many reports on the varied relations between Jews, Christians, and Muslims, and discusses issues of Biblical, cultural, and historical relevance. A wealth of detail. Moses Margoliouth (1820-1881) was a Polish-born British scholar, a Jewish convert to Christianity, and an Anglican minister. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and at the Hebrew College, London. He was the author of The History of the Jews in Great Britain (1851). From the collection of John Wilson (c. 1826-1900), pioneer merchant and book collector of Portland, Oregon. The eight-thousand volume collection, considered one of the finest on the west coast, was bequeathed to the Portland public library in 1900.

    Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Two Volume Set. VERY GOOD MINUS. Both volumes uniform in the original dark blue blind-stamped cloth, with bright gilt titling/lettering to both spines. Some slight light 'patching' to the covers. The head/tail of the spines and the corners of the covers are 'bumped/crumpled' but have NO loss or chipping. There is a tiny (0.5cm) loss of cloth to the inner front edge of Volume 2, but Overall this a sound and attractive 2 Volume Set. Images available on Request. The page fore-edges are LIGHTLY ingrained/stained with the dust of over a century and a half. Hinges tight and secure. Plain lemon endpapers. The rear inner paper hinges are split - through to the webbing in Volume One - but NO Inscriptions or marks, APART FROM some old damp-staining to the portrait frontispiece to Volume One only. An engraved frontispiece to each volume. Most of the pages of Both volumes are uncut to the top edge (unused and unread) and Internally, apart from the light brown old damp-stains to the frontispiece of volume one, the books are Very Good, Very Clean, Tight and Bright. Volume One = (xvi) + 438 pp. Illustrated with a Portrait Frontispiece steel engraving (with some damp-staining) and one other full page steel engraving of Tunis (small dampstain to the bottom blank margin) ; and with 8 wood engravings in the text, including a small map of Malta. Volume Two = (xvi) + 429 pp. Illustrated with a Frontispiece steel engraving and one other full page steel engraving of Goletta or Bay of Tunis; and with 6 wood engravings in the text, PLUS pages of Hebrew Music.
