Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout. front free endpaper - frontispiece are detached but still present. Stamp and pen inscription to front free endpaper.Thumb-marking present. Minor dog-eared corners. Noticeable creasing to gutter. Front hinge is cracked with exposed netting. Front and rear boards are loose but still attached. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Notable tanning to spine and edges. Visible splits to spine ends. Marks and scratches overall. Textblock is shaky.

Top edges gilt. The gilt top edges on vols .III and IV have small areas of discoloration. Frontis illustration in each volume. There is light shelf wear on all corners and spine caps. Fore-edges and bottom edges are rough-cut. Front hinge of vol.I is cracked. All bindings firm. Endpapers and preliminary pages are age-toned with sprinkling of foxing. Several pages in each book have been left uncut. Otherwise, the books are clean and unmarked. Too heavy to ship overseas.

Wear mostly to the spine. Spine of each volume has insect damage that looks like fading. Lettering is only partially visible on each volume. Volume 1 also has some similar wear to the back cover edges. Volume 2 is 484 pages. Similar condition to volume 1, with slightly more of that insect damage to the front cover. Edges and corners bumped and frayed, spine worn. Pages within are clean and bright. Volume 3 is 512 pages. Front cover is mostly clean with insect damage mostly on the back cover edges and spine. Pages also clean and bright inside. Volume 4 is 508 pages. Damage mostly to the outside edges and the spine. Each volume contains a frontispiece illustration in very good condition.
