Here in "Dance Dance Dance" Murakami continues the tale of an ordinary man on an extraordinary journey. Now in his mid-thirties, our hero lives in a world glittering with technology and success. Yet in his dreams his ex-lover Kiki calls to him. So from the urban haunts of Tokyo he returns to northern Hokkaido to the Dolphin Hotel, where the girl with the most beautiful ears in the world mysteriously vanished, only to find it unaccountably transformed. And some things just don't ring true. ***Bizarre, surreal and totally unpredictable, "Dance Dance Dance" is also a witty satire on the loss of the individual's identity, and will reaffirm Murakami's reputation as an extraordinary writer.' Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper. ***'Murakami emerges as a wholly original talent'. [Publishers Weekly] Review quote taken from back panel of dustwrapper. ***First impression of the first UK edition, published as a paperback original. Uncommon to find now in first printing. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First Edition. -----------( 1st Printing of the First US Edition ) ---hardcover, a Near Fine example, ---in a Near Fine dustjacket, looks new, Kodansha stamp on rear blank endpaper, a very nice copy, ---" A marvelous hybrid of mythology and mystery, A Wild Sheep Chaseis the extraordinary literary thriller that launched Haruki Murakami's international reputation. ---It begins simply enough: A twenty-something advertising executive receives a postcard from a friend, and casually appropriates the image for an insurance company's advertisement. What he doesn't realize is that included in the pastoral scene is a mutant sheep with a star on its back, and in using this photo he has unwittingly captured the attention of a man in black who offers a menacing ultimatum: find the sheep or face dire consequences. Thus begins a surreal and elaborate quest that takes our hero from the urban haunts of Tokyo to the remote and snowy mountains of northern Japan, where he confronts not only the mythological sheep, but the confines of tradition and the demons deep within himself. Quirky and utterly captivating, A Wild Sheep Chase is Murakami at his astounding best. ".He burst upon the international scene with the wildly acclaimed 'A Wild Sheep Chase.' He quickly came to represent the quirky voice of a new generation of Japanese writers. Now Haruki Murakami gives us his wittiest, boldest, most daring work to date. 'Dance Dance Dance' continues the extraordinary adventure of an ordinary man. At thirty something, Murakami's nameless hero lives in a hi-tech, high-rise world where old virtues die fast and success is all that matters. He has shared in the glittering city's spoils, and while he has not sold his soul, he knows that something is lacking in his life. Now, in dreams, a mysterious woman weeps softly -- for him. Yet, even as he tries to understand why, the voice that beckons is not hers. And still he dreams. Bizarre dreams that propel him down byways of his life in search of . ? His is a strange odyssey: en route, a thirteen-year-old girl, distressingly beautiful and clairvoyant, is his constant companion; a classmate, now oozing charm on TV soaps, grapples with murder; a lady of the night becomes his guardian angel; and an eccentric Sheep Man materializes to counsel and cajole. What's a fellow to do? Dance. You gotta dance as long as the music plays. And dance is what our hero does . in the most unexpected ways!." Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition in English. First impression of the first American edition. Translated from the Japanese by Alfred Birnbaum. Stated First American Edition. ***The American edition is the first edition in English, originally published in Japan by Kodansha Ltd., Tokyo in 1982 as "Hitsuji o meguru boken [literally "An Adventure Surrounding Sheep"]. Published as an independent sequel to "Pinball, 1973", and the third book in the so-called "Trilogy of the Rat". Winner of the 1982 Noma Literary Newcomer's Prize. ***Near fine in purple paper-covered boards with a bright-green cloth-covered spine, with silver titles. The titles are still nice and bright. Head and tail of spine just very slightly creased. Boards clean and unmarked, with just a little fading to the purple colour at the extremities. Page block edges also nice and clean, including the fore-edge. Internally near fine, with no tears or creases, and the paper still white. No inscriptions. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of $18.95. The top and tail of the dustwrapper are slightly creased. The dustwrapper would be fine except for some fading to the dark-blue colour on the spine and at the top edge of the front panel. Dustwrapper nevertheless bright. ***In addition, the dustwrapper retains the Japanese wraparound band which was included for publicity purposes when the book was first published in the USA. The book also comes with the original Kodansha Fiction Pamphlet and Wild Sheep Chase Postcard. There are also a couple of photocopied newspaper articles from the period when the book was published in 1989. [Please see scans] ***235 mm x 160 mm. 299 pages. ***'While the original story of "A Wild Sheep Chase" was set in the 1970s, translator Alfred Birnbaum and Kodansha editor Elmer Luke wanted a story that was more contemporary and also appealed to American readers. In the novel, Murakami blends elements of American and English literature with Japanese contexts, exploring post-WWII Japanese cultural identity. The book is part mystery and part magical realism with a postmodern twist. The book is the third in Murakami's '"The Rat" Trilogy', preceded by "Hear the Wind Sing" and "Pinball, 1973". All three books follow the sometimes surreal adventures of an unnamed first-person narrator and his friend, nicknamed 'The Rat'. All three novels begin from or refer back to November 25, 1970, the day on which Japanese author, poet, playwright and right-wing activist Yukio Mishima committed seppuku following a failed coup attempt at the headquarters of Japan's Self Defense Forces. Some Japanese critics have speculated that "A Wild Sheep Chase" is a rewriting or parody of Mishima's The Adventure of Natsuko. "A Wild Sheep Chase" has been described as "a postmodern detective novel in which dreams, hallucinations and a wild imagination are more important than actual clues.' [Wiki] ***First impression of the first American edition - the first edition in English translation, in the original dustwrapper. With the additional benefit of having the original (and uncommon) Japanese wraparound band, and the publisher's inserts, as well as a couple of loosely inserted photocopies of period newspaper articles. Of interest to collectors of the work of Haruki Murakami. Uncommon in first edition, and particularly hard to find with these additional attributes. A real collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
