The author was a Japanese high school student when all students were drafted into the war, he decided to apply for training as a pilot, the student pilots were rushed into combat at the time suicide attacks became a policy. During the battle of Okinawa, 2,571 Japanese pilots crashed their planes, sinking 23 U.S. warships.
