NEW JERSEY. GEOLOGIST, STATE. . The Clays and Clay Industry of New Jersey. Trenton, 1904. xxvii, 548 p. Plates, folding charts, folding maps. Cloth. A very good copy. Compiled by Heinrich Ries and Henry B. Kummel. The second major work on the pottery clays of New Jersey, with much information on the individuals and firms engaged in the industry throughout the nineteenth century. While the 1878 report was devoted exclusively to central and northern New Jersey sites, and to Middlesex County sites in particular, this second report includes southern New Jersey sites as well. A very difficult book to find in clean, tight condition. Final Report of the State Geologist, Volume VI.

NEW JERSEY. GEOLOGIST, STATE. A consecutive bound run of the annual reports of the State Geologist from 1869 through 1881. Trenton, 1870-1881. 13 numbers. With a profusion of folding plans and charts and large folding maps. Neatly bound together in one thick volume in period half morocco. Rubbed at the extremities, but a very good, tight binding. From the library of Wm. N. Nutt, with his name in gilt at the foot of the spine. Nutt was one of the chief assistants to William S. Stryker in the adjutant general's office and later clerk of the city of Trenton. The annual reports of the State Geologist comprise one of the least known, and most useful, New Jersey research tools, and are a very important source for local history and for local and regional site planning. The subjects treated, usually in great depth and with illustrations, range from local industries (quarrying, mining, building, sawmills, pottery, brickmaking, fishing, timber mining, water control, &c., &c.) to archaeology, topography, water resources, firefighting, forest control, and much more. The many photographs of local scenes are invaluable. Given the mediocre quality of the paper and the binding of most of these reports, this is a clean, desirable run, in an attractive binding.
