Minor wear to edges. Meredith Nicholson (December 9, 1866 December 21, 1947) was a best-selling author from Indiana, United States, a politician, and a diplomat.Nicholson was born on December 9, 1866, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Edward Willis Nicholson and the former Emily Meredith. Largely self-taught, Nicholson began a newspaper career in 1884 at the Indianapolis Sentinel. He moved to the Indianapolis News the following year, where he remained until 1897.He wrote Short Flights in 1891, and continued to publish extensively, both poetry and prose until 1928. During the first quarter of the 20th century, Nicholson, along with Booth Tarkington, George Ade, and James Whitcomb Riley helped to create a Golden Age of literature in Indiana. Three of his books from that era were national bestsellers:The House of a Thousand Candles (#4 in 1906)The Port of Missing Men (#3 in 1907)A Hoosier Chronicle (#5 in 1912)In 1928, Nicholson entered Democratic party politics, and served for two years as a city councilman in Indianapolis. He rose through the ranks of the Democratic party and was rewarded with appointments as Envoy to Paraguay, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.; Color Illustrations; 7.4 X 5.3 X 1.4 inches; 399 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Good Plus to Very Good. Clarence F. Underwood (illustrator). First Edition. Perhaps best remembered for his bestselling romantic thriller, "The House of A Thousand Candles," Nicholson, a self-taught journalist and writer, who later became an ambassador to Paraguay and Nicauragua, followed up "A Thousand Candles," with "The Port of Missing Men," a bestselling spy-mystery, that was also the basis for a movie. Originally published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1907, this copy is a reprint, the First Printing, First Edition of the A.Wessels Co., edition in 1908. The white, blind-stamped lettering on the spine has flaked off but the title and author on the front cover remain basically intact, with the paste-on illustration lightly soiled but o/w undamaged. The spine ends and corners show only minor wear in this century-old book. The front end page shows a short, neat gift inscription to the previous owner, dated 1908, o/w the text is clean, unmarked and complete. The story built around the life or death status of a pair of Austrian royalty and the identity of the individual who knows the answer to that question, compares well with contemporary thrillers.
