Volumes III and IV, in three volumes (with two books for Vol. III). "London and Middlesex; or, an Historical, Commercial and Descriptive Survey of the Metropolis of Great Britain including Sketches of its Environs, and a Topographical Account of the most Remarkable Places in the above County. Illustrated with engravings [31 in Vol. III Part 1, 41 in Vol. III Part 2 and 52 in Vol. IV]. Engravings have moderate-heavy foxing and a blind stamp to top border. All books include indexes; last two volumes include various additions and bibliographies. Books are large brown cloth hardbacks (rebinds) with gilt titles and shelfmarks to spines, and marbled edges. Overall very good - ex-library with bookplates and stamps to PFEPs, stamps to fore-edges and title pages and gilt shelfmarks to spines; rebound with new endpapers. Occasional slight foxing to pages, edges a little browned, light wear to corners. PLEASE NOTE: this is a heavy set and is likely to require extra postage.

Main text runs from page 713 to 1201 and together with an index and list of books appears to have been printed in 1813 and is found bound with various titles and publishers. This copy with a pictorial title page apparently dated 1820 (date very hard to read). Map (by G Cole is dated 1808) (and is very worn with repair). Reasonably clean tight text but fairly heavy offsetting and spotting throughout. Old half leather and marbled boards is fairly sound but very worn.

Spines are a little faded. Crack to the tail of the front joint of Volume IV. Hinges of all four volumes are starting. Front endpaper of Volume II is detaching. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the occasional scattered spot, spotting a little heavier to the plates. Small tide mark to the tail of the first few pages of Volume IV. Chip to the margin of page 643 Volume IV, no loss of text. Good. book.

Some wear to the leather but no splits and all firm bindings and still looks attractive. Contents have some spotted tanning but mostly very clean and all 139 copper engraved plates are very clean. Marble-paper end papers and bookplate of William Spottiswoode in each volume. Volume I by Brayley published 1810, with vignette on half-title page, 680 pages and 66 pages of index and list of books. Volume II by Brayley, published in 1814 with vignette on half-title page, 803 pages, 64 pages index and 20 plates. Volume III by Nightingale, published in 1815 with vignette on half-title, 756 pages, 24 pages index and 28 plates. Volume III, part II by Nightingale, published in 1815, with vignette on half-title, 752 pages, 70 pages index, list of books and 39 plates. Volume IV by Brewer, published in 1816, with vignette on half-title, 758 pages, 55 pages index, list of books and 52 plates. (Volume IV has a section of 20 pages which is heavily tanned). There are 46 extra plates than that listed. In all there are 139 plates with 5 vignettes in these volumes which does not correspond to the list of plates in each volume which only amount to 93 plates. Images on request. Five volumes consisting of the whole of the 'London and Middlesex' section of the series - 'Beauties of England and Wales'. This series originally published in 25 volumes. These 5 volumes were published between 1810 and 1816 are marked oddly, but form the complete set of 'London and Middlesex. All volumes are unifomly bound in full leather with 5 raised bands, Gilt titling on 2 labels and gilt decoration to each compartment. Probably contemporary or near contemporary bindings. Each spine has some damage, some worse then others, and Part 3 has the front cover and front endpapers detached. ALL Edges Marbled. Internally each volume has marbled endpapers and 2 former owners labels to the front pastedown - just the printed names in fancy old type - Bevington Gibbins and, below, his son - Frederick J. Gibbins ( Bevington Gibbins born 1792 in Aston, Birmingham, married Rebecca Tregelles, The Tregelles-Price family were owners of the Iron Works in Neath Abbey. ). On the ffep opposite is the bookplate of 'Neath Antiquarian Society'. All volumes have a copper engraved Frontispiece and engraved title , followed by a printed title. The Engraved title shows the volumes noted as Vol. X. Part 1, Vol X. Part II and so on to Part V - but the Printed titles read Vol I; Vol II; Vol III; Vol III, Part II; Vol IV. On the foot of the spines the gilt titling reads Vol X, XI, XII, XIII, and XIV. No plate list in any volume but - Vol I = Frontispiece + engraved title + I Plates. Vol 2 = Frontispiece + engraved title + 21 plates. Vol 3 = Frontispiece + engraved title + 30 plates. Vol 4 = Frontispiece + engraved title + 40 plates. Vol 5 = Frontispiece + engraved title + 51 plates. 8vo (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") ; (In all 142 plates + 5 Frontispieces + engraved titles - Some plates show 2 views ) . Some pages partially cut or roughly cut, some foxing spots here and there, browning to the pages opposite the plates, 'tho for most part the plates are generally clean, but some have foxing/patching to the margins. Each volume varies re the condition of the text and the plates, but overall this is a tight, generally clean set. This set is overweight and very heavy at around 6.5 Kilos and will require extra postage for International buyers only. Please ask for costs.
