First edition. First edition. 4to. Volume I: Silverton's Roots. Signed by the author on the title page. Two tone quarter cloth and color pictorial paper over boards, titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine and in white on the front cover, 352 pp., preface, acknowledgements, double column, illustrated (some in color), portraits, plates, tables, maps, epilogue, bibliography, index. Silverton was founded by mining entrepreneurs William Kearnes, Dempsey Reese, and Thomas Blair in 1874. The region boomed after George Howard and R. J. McNutt discovered the Sunnyside silver vein along Hurricane Peak. Gold was then discovered in 1882, which helped the region weather the Panic of 1893 far better than other mining communities, such as Aspen or Creede. The Sunnyside Mine would become one of Colorado's longest running and most productive mines. Volume II: Ruts Into Silverton. Two tone quarter cloth and color pictorial paper over boards, titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine and in white on the front cover, 352 pp., preface, acknowledgements, double column, illustrated (some in color), portraits, plates, tables, maps, index. Volume III: Rails Into Silverton. Signed by the author on the half title page. Two tone quarter cloth and color pictorial paper over boards, titles stamped in gold gilt on the spine and in white on the front cover, 352 pp., preface, acknowledgements, double column, illustrated (some in color), portraits, plates, tables, maps, bibliography, glossary of mining terms, index, errors and additions. Volume I provides an illustrated history of the earliest exploration in the high San Juans of Southwestern Colorado and of settlement and founding of Silverton, Colorado. Volume II provides an illustrated history of Silverton, Colorado, and its sphere of influence in the high San Juan Mountains from the town's incorporation to the approach of the railroad. Volume III provides an illustrated history of Silverton and the high San Juans from the opening of the 1880s through the outlaw period and the construction of the railroad to the beginning of the Red Mountain excitement. All three volumes are in fine condition.
