Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 658pp, 590pp. frontispieces. Dark Blue cloth. Bold gilt lettering on the spine. Over 75 illustrations, including foldouts. Top edges gilt. There is wear to the bottom spine edge, a light stain to the front endpaper. There is an attractive inscription and signature from the previous owner, Charles D. Barney. He was the husband of Jay Cooke's daughter, Laura Elmina Cooke. Barney was also the founder of Charles D. Barney & Co., the predecessor to Smith Barney. Jay Cooke was an American financier who helped finance the Union war effort during the American Civil War and the postwar development of railroads in the northwestern United States. He is generally acknowledged as the first major investment banker in the United States and creator of the first wire house firm. An historic association copy. Size: Octavo.
