The "best recordings" should not be confused with a mere listing of the singer's "greatest hits" based on sales or popularity, the authors insist, but were instead chosen for their combination of a) an outstanding vocal performance with b) significance in the context of American popular music, and c) the "enduring quality of the overall work." While these criteria work well through the '40s and '50s ("But Beautiful," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "Bewitched") do we detect here a reluctance to admit that -- with the exception of "New York, New York" -- Old Blue Eyes' 15 entries listed here from 1966 to 1983 ("Strangers In the Night" is omitted) were the work of an old-timer with decreasing relevance to the "history of American popular music" in the era of Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones . . . the rock 'n roll he so loudly reviled?
