Softcover. Condition: New. Reprint. Against the Tide is a leadership book that illustrates how Adm. Hyman Rickover made a unique impact on American and Navy culture. The driving force behind the Navy's nuclear submarine fleet, Rickover revolutionized naval warfare while concurrently proving to be a wellspring of innovation that drove American technology in the latter half of the twentieth-century. Rear Adm. Dave Oliver, USN (Ret.) is the first former nuclear submarine commander who sailed for the venerable admiral to write about Rickover's management techniques. Oliver draws upon a wealth of untold stories to show how one man changed American and Navy culture while altering the course of history.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. One leaf folded in half, 7.5 x 5.5". Fold creases, removal marks on back, ink light else good to very good condition. He writes to Major General Lyndale that "after mature deliberation I have decided not to be present at the meeting of the Loyal Legion tonight". The Loyal Legion aka the Miltary Order Of The Loyal Legion Of The United States was founded in 1865 and was composed of commissioned officers from the Army, Navy and Marines who had served in the Civil War. In 1861, Admiral Glisson was the commander of the steamer U.S.S. Mount Vernon, who, while patrolling the Atlantic Coast rescued six slaves who had escaped from the Confederate Army (they had been used as human shields) and was awaiting orders from the government when he rescued three more slaves. He received a reply from the Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles: "It is not the policy of the government to invite or encourage this class of desertion, and yet, under the circumstances, no other course than that pursued by Commander Glisson could be adopted without violating every principle of humanity".
