Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Beautifully bound volume of American Poetry signed by all contributors published to raise money for the preservation of Boston's Old South Church. This FINE copy is bound in full elegant brown morocco with boards ruled and paneled in an arts and crafts style, with a green leaf gothic like design with accenting red berries. The spine continues the design elements adding the title, some authors and the date. Exaggerated turn ins continue the design in gilt only, paste downs and first fly in a gold moire. This volume was created as a fund raiser for the old Boston meeting house or old south church as it was known. Built in 1729 and used throughout the American Revoloution it had been in use as a church until 1872 when there were thoughts of razing it. Funds were raised to turn it into a museum and in 1877 this title was first published to help with that effort. A second fundraiser/publication occured in 1879 and included an unknown quantity containing the original signatures of the poets and theologians that contributed work. So goes this copy which contains the ORIGINAL SIGNATURES OF SOME OF THE MOST RESPECTED POETS OF THE TIME; LONGFELLOW, WHITTIER, HOLMES, HOWE, HALE AND CLARKE. This copy also contains the bookplate of Roy Arthur Hunt and a full page gift inscription which states that Hunt is a descendent of the first pastor of the church, Thomas Thacher. Binding is signed [John] GRABAU, original front cloth cover and spine bound in at rear, includes accompanying felt lined slip case with extraction ribbon. Signed by Author(s).
