Collects two series' of work, tete-beche format (two front covers and two text blocks, one rotated 180 degrees relative to the other): Many Wars which features American veterans draped in cloth blankets with interviews on how the wars have affected their lives; and Soldier, in which young, active duty American soldiers were photographed close up with their heads resting on tabletops. The images from the Soldier series were presented as billboards in nine American cities from 2008 through 2010. Reviewing them for The New York Times, photography critic Vince Aletti wrote: "The posture is vulnerable and startlingly intimate, as if these young men and women were facing someone in bed or on a stretcher. Opton catches soldiers both on guard and off, looking out and inward simultaneously, and we can only imagine what they're thinking, what they've done, and what they dread." Both bodies of work were selected by Martin Paar for the Brighton Photo Biennial in 2010; the book appeared on a number of "Best Photography Books of the Year" lists. Photographs and interviews by Suzanne Opton; essays by Phillip Prodger and Ann Jones. From an unnumbered edition limited to 1500 copies. 104 pages; 39 color plates; 9.75 x 12.25 inches.
