Hardcover. Condition: Fine. d"Orbigny, Charles; Stewart, J.; Bewick, Thomas; Oudart; Pretre; Blanchard; Travies; Baron, et al (illustrator). 1st Edition. Fine condition heavy oversized (folio - over 13 inches tall) green cloth boards with gold spine lettering, contained in a fine condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Foreword by Gerald Durrell; Preface; and Index. Profusely illustrated with both black-and-white drawings and over 200 full-color prints. The lower front and rear board edges are lightly rubbed (see photographs). "Originally published in 1774 as 'History of the Earth and Animated Nature', Oliver Goldsmith's popular writings were described as being "of a class that the world would not willingly let die." This fascinating study of the wonderful creations of nature, written in beautiful, clear prose, and combined with some of the finest natural history prints ever created, provides a kaleidoscopic view of the animal kingdom. Goldsmith drew heavily on the work of his earlier naturalists, using Buffon as his main guide, although he had little regard for the elaborate classifications of other scientists. It was his aim "to excite an interest in the science of natural history by displaying before the public eye its numberless treasures." This, therefore, is not a scientific work, but a highly entertaining account, which the English diaryist Samuel Johnson prophesied would "prove as interesting as a fairytale," of the habits, manners, friendships and hostilities of a wide array of animals, such as the scorpion, the sheep, the cassowary and the sea urchin. Goldsmith's prose is lavishly illustrated, with more than 200 finely reproduced plates that range from the majestic birds and beasts of the jungle, to farmyard animals, and to the smaller, but no less fascinating reptiles, insects, and fish. These exquisitely accurate and colorful plates from M. Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle are the perfect companion to Goldsmith's Illustrated History of the Natural World. Included are illustrations from the best natural history artists of the nineteenth century, such as Oudard, Pretre, Blanchard, Travies and Baron. The combination of Goldsmith's prose and these beautiful plates create a classic work, the like of which has not been seen in the public domain for years." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

ORBIGNY, M. Alcide d' (1802-1857). Voyage Pittoresque Dans les Deux Ameriques. Resume general de tous les voyages. Paris: Chez L. Tenre, 1836. 4to. (11 2/8 x 7 4/8 inches). Half-title. Fine folding engraved map of North America, and another of South America by Dufour, frontispiece and 133 pages of engraved plates, including one folding. Contemporary quarter calf bound on marbled paper boards, four raised bands on the spine with blind tooling, gilt paneling and titled in one (one panel missing with head of spine exposed, priced accordingly). PROVENANCE: Formerly of the collection of noted collector Jean P. Perrette, with his bookplate. FIRST ABRIDGED EDITION, BOUND FROM THE ORIGINAL PARTS OF ORBIGNY'S COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF HIS EXPLORATION OF AMERICA. Published in 90 fascicles between 1834 and 1847, and beautifully bound in marbled paper boards. Extensively illustrated with numerous plates depicting anthropologic scenes of natives, heroic vignettes, and one large fold out depicting an elaborate religious procession. Commissioned by the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, in June 1826, Orbigny "did not return until March 1834. During these eight years he traveled through the entire continent, making extensive scientific studies under difficult and often dangerous conditions. At the time, much of the continent had been explored only slightly or not at all. Between 1834 and 1847 d'Orbigny published in ten volumes the results of his eight-year expedition to South America, which focus particularly on Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru. The material - which extended to zoology, geography, geology, paleontology, ethnography, and anthropology - constituted the most detailed description of a continent ever made" (DSB). Interestingly the young John James Audubon and the d'Orbigny family were well known to each other. Audubon wrote of him, "The doctor was a good fisherman, a good hunter, and fond of all objects of nature. Together we searched the woods, the fields and the banks of the Loire, procuring every bird we could, and I made drawings of every one of them" (See Shirley Streshinsky, Audubon: Life and Art in the American Wilderness, 1993). Sabin 57458.

New edition of this summary of all the voyages made to the Americas since Christopher Columbus. The first edition appeared in 1836, and was expanded in 1853 with "exact information up to 1853 on the different states of the New World". This text does not constitute a summary of d'Orbigny's "Journey to South America", but drawing inspiration from the impressions and rich travel experience of the famous French naturalist, it offers a historical, political and geographical panorama of the islands. and American lands (or near America) discovered by European settlers since the first expeditions in the mid-16th century. Thus, the countries described are very numerous: Cuba, Haiti, the Antilles, Guyana, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, the whole of the United States, Canada, the Arctic pole, Greenland and Iceland. To illustrate this journey through time and space, 27 plates out of text in black represent scenes of life, costumes and unexpected landscapes; and, at the end of the volume, 2 large folding maps drawn up by Dufour offer general views of South and North America.

Nissen ZBI, 3019. Engelmann I, 644. British Museum (Natural History) III, 1474.
