Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Original black patterned cloth with gilt emblem on both covers. Tall octavo. 139pp. Later printing. Important work on asylum reform by the American advocate for the rights of married women and people accused of insanity. Elizabeth Parsons Ware Packard (1816-1897) spent three years in the Illinois Hospital for the Insane after being falsely accused of insanity by her strict Calvinist husband. She successfully defended her case in the 1864 trial Packard V. Packard and spent the rest of her life as an advocate for the rights of asylum patients. A very good copy with some light wear to the cloth. The text is very good with some minor soiling and wear. The rear hinge is cracked but secure and there is a number written in blue ink on the rear inside cover. Quite scarce.
