En sus páginas, el escritor confecciona con léxico preciso una tela de araña en la que conviven la rudeza del mundo rural castellano, y una realidad superpuesta de tintes poéticos que va impregnando las palabras como una lluvia silenciosa, y que termina por mitificar la narración. En la novela encontramos ya los temas y obsesiones fundamentales de Pascual Pozas, entre los que se destaca "el viaje" hacia una tierra de felicidad utópica e inalcanzable; "tierra negra, fértil, muy fértil", asegura uno de los personajes de la novela, que se ubica "más allá todavía (. ) donde da la vuelta el mar, más allá" (pp. 103-104). Las voces narrativas se entrelazan en un claroscuro que trasciende los límites de la novela regionalista y le da un sentido universal. Los descendientes del musgo atrapa con su lograda atmósfera de frío, memoria y esperanza y, como toda obra de alto valor literario, consigue que el lector se deje engullir con placer por el texto gracias a la fuerza hipnótica de su construcción narrativa, y la impresión de familiaridad- de haber compartido con los personajes parte de su pasado y de su tierra helada- que despierta en todos los que se acercan a él. Como en toda la narrativa de Pascual Pozas, el lenguaje construye un mundo y selecciona a sus destinatarios. Especial atención merecen la habilidad para el manejo de los variados registros que caracterizan a sus personajes (retórico, vulgar, coloquial, arrabalero, altisonante. ); la construcción de unos diálogos que solo aparecen cuando significan un verdadero intercambio de puntos de vista o cuando hacen progresar un conflicto, las palabras que retratan el mundo rural y la intertextualidad. La novela dialoga y debate, entre otras cosas, sobre la función social de la prensa y el tratamiento de la noticia, y la finalidad de la literatura frente a la realidad. Finalmente parece que el viaje ha tenido sentido para el narrador: . Y cuando desde mi ventana miro el mundo, alguien me recuerda que "Hablar sobre árboles es casi un crimen porque supone callar sobre tantas atrocidades", y también para sus lectores.
