Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the relationship between the nucleus and cytoplasm in the genus Arcella, a shelled freshwater protozoan. The author presents a detailed analysis of the quantitative relations between these two cell components, demonstrating that a definite relation exists between nuclear number and cell size within each pure line. The author's experiments reveal that when the single nucleus in a half-specimen divides into two, the cytoplasm and both nuclei are retained in the parent shell, resulting in the production of binucleate offspring. These offspring are larger than the parent, and their offspring are still larger, leading to a gradual increase in diameter and spine number over generations. The author concludes that the insights gained from this study provide a valuable contribution to our understanding of the complex relationship between the nucleus and cytoplasm in cell biology.
