Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911) was an early feminist American author and intellectual who challenged traditional Christian beliefs of the afterlife, challenged women's traditional roles in marriage and family, advocated clothing reform for women, and was an early animal rights supporter. Married a man 15 years younger, but spent very little time with him. This is the third of her spiritual, 'after death experience' novels: Gates Ajar (1868), Since I Died (1873) and this one in 1883.
