Erste Ausgabe der Arbeit zur Thermochemie. - Berthelot (1827-1907) befasste sich zunächst mit der Synthese organischer Verbindungen, bis er sich seit 1869 der Thermochemie zuwandte. Es geht dabei um die Verbrennungs- und Bildungswärmen chemischer Stoffe und Prozesse und ihre Beziehung zu einer Stoffumsetzung. In diesem Zusammenhang prägte Berthelot die Begriffe "exotherm" und "endotherm" als Beschreibung chemischer Reaktionen. Berthelots Forschung war weltweit anerkannt, so auch in Deutschland. Zahlreiche internationale Mitgliedschaften und Ehrenmitgliedschaften legen davon Zeugnis ab. So wurde er im Jahre 1869 auswärtiges Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und 1882 als ausländisches Mitglied in den preußischen Orden "Pour le merite" für Wissenschaften und Künste aufgenommen. In Deutschland war es Hermann Helmholtz, der Bertholets Forschungsergebnisse aufgriff und weiterführte. - Sein Studium der Naturwissenschaften in Paris schloss Berthelot im Jahre 1854 mit der Dissertation ab, in der er an die Forschung Michel Eugène Chevreuls anknüpfte. Im Jahre 1859 folgte der Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für organische Chemie an die École Supérieure de Pharmacie, im Jahre 1865 dann der Ruf an das Collège de France, wo man ihm einen für seine Arbeiten passenden Lehrstuhl neu eingerichtet hatte. Auf seine Karriere als Naturwissenschaftler von internationaler Geltung folgten Episoden in der Politik: Berthelot wurde im Kabinett René Goblet Bildungsminister (1886-1887) und im Kabinett Léon Bourgeois kurzzeitig französischer Außenminister (1895-1896).
