Octavo, pictorial wrappers. First U.S. edition. Equinox / Avon 23929. Actually, this is the American edition of NEW WORLDS 7, published by Sphere Books in 1974. The twenty-five selections in this issue, all published here for the first time, consist of mostly fiction but include some poetry and criticism. NEW WORLDS: THE SCIENCE FICTION QUARTERLY was a paperback anthology edited by the staff of NEW WORLDS following the magazine's demise in 1970 (there was a subscriber's only issue, number 201, published in March 1971). NEW WORLDS was the dominant British science fiction magazine of the 1960s and since about 1956, is considered by some to be "the most significant and relevant of all SF magazines." - Mike Ashley. The paperback anthology, devoted to publishing "speculative fiction," managed to survive for ten issues (1971-1976), first as a quarterly, then irregular. After the sixth issue, Michael Moorcock handed over the editorship Hilary Bailey; Charles Platt continued as coeditor and M. John Harrison joined the enterprise as "literary editor." This major original anthology series is unjustly neglected -- not even included in the anthology section of the fifth edition of ANATOMY OF WONDER -- and that's a shame. Trade paperback format. A fine copy. (#162106).
