The diaries of the Rev. Francis Kilvert, dating from 1870 to 1879. Kilvert was an English clergyman, his diaries well reflecting rural life in Britain during the 1870s. During this period he was a vicar at Llanigon, St Harmon, and Bredwardine. Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I. Collated complete. Volume I contains diaries from 1st January 1870 to 19th August 1871; Volume II contains diaries from 23rd August 1871 to 13th May 1874; Volume III contains diaries from 14th May 1874 to 13th March 1879. Edited by William Plomer, a South African and British novelist, poet and literary editor. With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. Bound in full calf. Externally, excellent, with light rubbing to the extremities.
