Octavo (8 3/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First edition. GM (and WIM) Zsuzsa (Susan) Polgár was born in Budapest, Hungary, and along with her two younger sisters, Judit Polgar and Zsofia Polgar, she was taught chess by her father, Laszlo Polgár. By 1984 she became the top-rated woman chess player in the world. Later that year, FIDE, in a controversial decision, granted 100 rating points to every female player except Zsuzsa. In 1991, Susan achieved the men's grandmaster title, and later that year, her sister Judit Polgar earned the title as well. She is a FIDE Senior Trainer. In 1996, Susan won the Women's World Championship, but refused to defend her title in 1999 against Xie Jun, because she believed the conditions were unfair. In 2004 she competed in the 36th Chess Olympiad, winning gold medals for points and for the highest performance rating. In total, she has won ten Olympiad medals during her career, and has never lost a single game in any Olympiad. Her highest-ever FIDE rating (2577) was achieved on the January 2005 list. This list also returned her to her position as the number one active female player in the world. In 2005, she broke Andrew David Martin 's 2004 world record by playing 326 opponents in a simultaneous exhibition, with a 309 wins, 14 draws and 3 losses for a 96.93% result. This record stood for 5 years before being broken by Kiril D Georgiev. Susan lived for many years in New York City, where she ran the Polgár Chess Center. She also resided in Lubbock, Texas, where she served as coach to the Texas Tech University chess team - but has since moved to the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. She is one of the best-selling chess authors worldwide, and she speaks seven languages fluently. Condition: Corners umped, light edge wear else a very good to fine copy.

First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 12 pages with photographs. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's wrappers. First edition. The 2006 Mayors Cup Super Chess Tournament, which will take place on Sunday, June 25th, and Monday, June 26th at the New York Athletic Club, included some of the finest players in the United States including Susan Polgar, Gata Kamsky, Alex Onischuk, Boris Gulko, Alex Stripunsky, and Ildar Ibragimov. This was the highest rated double round robin chess tournament in US history. The average USCF rating of the six players was 2665+. The time control of the tournament was 25 minutes per game with 5 seconds delay. One notable name that was missing in this event is Hikaru Nakamura who was invited and participated in the previous Mayor's Cup Invitational. Most of the games were very hard fought and they were basically decided in the last minute or two, sometimes even in the last few seconds. In round one Boris Gulko with the White pieces created an incredible sacrifice against Susan that almost gave him a full point. She defended very well to hang on and even missed a winning combination toward the end of the game. The game ended with each player getting ½ point. Boris Gulko took the early lead in round two by defeating Gata Kamsky. Gata overpushed and Boris displayed his impeccable endgame technique to score a full point. In round 5 Susan Polgar and Alex Stripunsky (who happened to be neighbors in Forest Hills, NY) played a game that ended in a wild draw. In round 5 Susan and Alex Stripunsky (who happened to be neighbors in Forest Hills, NY) played a game that ended in a wild draw. These six players gave their all to try to win the prominent Mayor s Cup. Gata played very well and deserved to win the tournament. He lived up to the Grinder nickname as he mowed down his helpless opponents. Alex Onischuk was truly the "Rock". He was the only player not to lose a single game! He even joked that he was the Rock and the Invincible at this event. Boris Gulko started out very well but he was tired at the end. Ildar Ibragimov fought valiantly and he was the unlucky loser in some of the games after outplaying some of his opponents. Alex Stripunsky fought hard until the last game and the clock did him a few times. But he never gave up. Susan had her ups and downs as she is clearly still rusty. Condition: Some light edge wear, corners gently bumped else very good.
