Georges et Claude Pompidou formaient un couple pétri de culture classique mais en avance sur son temps. Leur insatiable curiosité partagée, au-delà de la disparition du Président, apparaît donc doublement animée par l'amour de l'art. Un nouveau regard sur les Pompidou nourri par les témoignages inédits de Madeleine Malraux, Maïa Paulin, Pierre Soulages.Au début des années trente, au Quartier latin, une rencontre inattendue réunit Georges Pompidou et Claude Cahour. Ils se marient quelques années plus tard et forment un couple uni partageant le goût de la littérature, de la musique, du cinéma. Très vite, ils fréquentent les galeries d'art et les artistes contemporains. Dès 1948, les Pompidou - comme on les appelle avec affection - font l'acquisition de leur première toile abstraite signée d'un peintre alors peu connu : Youla Chapoval. Par la suite, au fil des rencontres, leur collection se construit en relation étroite avec les créateurs. En 1958, Claude offre à son mari un Nicolas de Staël. En 1962, l'accrochage d'un Soulages dans le bureau du Premier ministre surprend. Quand, en 1969, à l'Élysée, le Président et son épouse font appel à Pierre Paulin et à Yaacov Agam pour la rénovation et la décoration de leurs appartements privés, force est de constater que l'art représente pour eux une raison de vivre. Que la création du Centre Pompidou viendra couronner. C'est cette fusion artistique, ce sens inné des oeuvres capables d'entrer dans l'Histoire, leurs rapports avec les artistes qu'Alain Pompidou et César Armand dévoilent dans cet ouvrage biographique et intime, riche de souvenirs, de témoignages et d'illustrations.
