Includes Foreword, Preface, List of Abbreviations, and Bibliography. Also includes Bibliography. This work was dedicated to the 7th Infantry Division (Light) and its commander Major General William H. Harrison. The Foreword was written by LTC Harry W. Mohr. Light fighters are the U.S. Army's answer to increased small-unit firepower without an extended logistics train. Light infantry embodies high firepower in a small infantry unity with almost no logistics capability. A light infantry unit is a combat unit supported almost entirely by other organizations. Its job is simply to fight, wile other organizations are concerned with food, ammunition, and transportation. The light infantry fights on the ground, takes the ground, and wins the battle. This manual was dedicated to light fighters and was designed for their use in training. The information in this manual was extracted from unclassified documents found at Forts Benning, Hood, Leavenworth, Lewis, and Ord. Most of the information was checked for practical value and/or supplemented in oral interviews with combat--experienced officers and NCOs at Forts Leavenworth and Ord. In order for the light infantryman to effectively fight heavier opponents, he must make maximum use of all possible advantages. One of these advantages is fighting at night. Historically, throughout the world, the night fighter--the "master of darkness"--has been greatly feared. The night fighter's own effectiveness, coupled with his opponent's fear of the dark, has often resulted in spectacular success in battle. This manual was published to help light fighters become night fighters. Here is all the information you need to carry out the successful night operation: the physical and psychological factors that affect night operations; night movement and positions; signaling; navigation, including map and terrain analysis; illumination techniques; and the training techniques that will make successful night fighters.
