First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition / First thus. No stated date on the copyright page, but ca. 1970-73. Inscribed by Abbey on the front free end paper in a robust black ink: "To Ray, all the best! Ed Abbey, Pasadena." As the jacket says, "In contrast to Eliot Porter's majestic natural world is the harsh human history of the Appalachians, reported here by Edward Abbey and Harry Caudill." Caudill, a prominent historian and opponent of strip-mining, provides the epilogue. Abbey may seem like an unlikely choice for a long essay about the region, but he was born in Pennsylvania and maintained a complicated attachment to Appalachia. Porter's photos in this volume are ever lush and intimate, a striking contrast to his photos of canyon walls in the Southwest--interesting to see this Southwest duo collaborate in the East. Again Abbey argues against industrial tourism and the ravages of extraction. A large quarto in salmon cloth with color photographic plates throughout, printed in Italy. Near fine with very light soiling or fading as well as a few bumps to board edges. In a very good jacket with tearing to lower spine, about one-inch, and a one-inch clean tear to top of spine at front edge of spine. Light sunning to top edge of front panel of jacket, more distinct on rear. A scarce copy signed by Abbey.
