Signed limited edition of Pritchett's reflective essay written on the occasion of his eightieth birthday. Small octavo, original cloth, illustrated with engravings by Reynolds Stone. On of 500 numbered copies signed by the author on the half-title page, this is number 105. Fine in the original slipcase. Theroux states in his introduction to the present volume, "This book came about through luck, friendship and coincidence. V. S. Pritchett wrote a reflective essay last year for his eightieth birthday. It appeared in a Sunday newspaper. It seemed to me wise and funny; it was beautifully written - a summing up, lit with great happiness. It deserved more permanent record, but Pritchett had no immediate plans to include it in a collection. 'Why not make a small book of it?' I said. 'By all means,' Pritchett said. Michael Russell agreed - and he was at that moment sorting through some Reynolds Stone wood engravings.".
