Wraps. Condition: good. Reprint Edition. 20, wraps, footnotes, small stains on covers, reprint of the pamphlet originally printed by Johns & Goolsby of Richmond, 1880. The author felt that earlier narratives of the Battle of Williamsburg "failed to give this regiment the exceedingly prominent and conspicuous place in that charge to which accident and its own value entitle it." The charge of Early's brigade was the charge of the Twenty-Fourth Virginia, and the enemy's whole resistance was directed against its attack. The author was the oldest son of Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury (pathfinder of the seas and the father of oceanography). The author fought in the battles of Williamsburg, Seven Pines, and Drewry's Bluff and was the Regiment's Colonel when the war ended. He became an exile immediately after the war, managing a silver mine in Nicaragua until he returned to the United States in 1867. He died in 1907. Our bibliographic research leads us to believe this was reprinted in 1960, as part of the increased interest in the Civil War due to the centennial celebrations.
