Hardcover first edition - First US printing. The third and final and best- known novel (although it stands alone) in the 'Fortunes of Robert Mahoney trilogy by this Australian author. The first two volumes had very modest sales and the UK publisher balked at this one - but when it appeared, it very quickly became a best seller in the US - the dust jacket announces a first printing of 80,000 copies - and it was hailed as a masterpiece and one of the greatest novels in the English language. Winner of the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal. 314 pp. Good overall in orange cloth (missing front endpaper) in a fair dust jacket (price-clipped, several chips, toning and wear to the folds).

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. This is the very rare 1922 Second Edition of the debut novel of Australian author Henry Handel Richardson. You can see the blue covers in the photographs provided. The gilt lettering on the front is very bright. On the spine it is only slightly less so. The front cover looks pretty much perfect. The spine has a crease at its bottom edge and a few light spots. The rear cover has a bit of discoloration in that one area adjacent to the spine (3rd photo). It is otherwise perfectly clean. The corners have a little color loss but no rub-through. The six edges are in very good condition. The page edges are quite clean. The book, despite running 562 pages, is very solidly bound. The pages are nicely tight. So are the covers. There are no cracks or spaces to be found anywhere. The pages are exceptionally clean. A slow scroll-through revealed no instances of soiling anywhere in the text. There is a tiny light spot on the half-title page. There are no markings on any of the pages. There is one attachment, a bookplate of a George L. and Harriet Carnes Cheney. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good plus. [356pp]: [x], 346; gilt navy cloth, lacking jacket; 191 x 132 x 37 mm. Canadian issue of the UK sheets (tp integral) in a proprietary Gundy binding (with Heinemann pressmark embossed rear); last volume in the expatriate Australian author's celebrated trilogy (1917-29). Considering the limited run of the first UK printing (1000), the Canadian issue may comprise second printing sheets (March 1929). Samuel Bradley Gundy, branch manager at Oxford University Press, Toronto (1904-36), acted as an agent for other publishers under separate imprint, ultimately adding his name to the merger of Doubleday, Doran as their Canadian representative (1928-35). Still, an anomalous imprint for a British import with a competing American edition (1929: Norton). A sound copy, hinges started, light foxing to fore-edge, with a 1cm split at crown of spine. Gilt on spine remains bright & fresh.
