Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Hardcover with DJ. Lovely, scarce, DJ is a woodcut design, black on creamy yellow paper. Some small chips and edgewear to DJ, but now protected in mylar. Book bound in purple cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Map endpapers. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated only 1947. 336 pages. Binding tight and clean, but ever-so-slightly shelf cocked. Half title page has two inscriptions on it. The first says 'For Betsy from Dillon and Mary Ripley. II.10.50.' Beneath that inscription Lovejoy has written, 'ex libris Elizabeth and then Mrs. Charles Seymour et in-libris Thomas Lovejoy. I/10/79" The original recipient of the book Betsy/Elizabeth went on to marry Charles Seymour who was the president of Yale. (either that, or she was their daughter). In any event, it's lovely that Lovejoy took the trouble to identify the original owner. Ripley went to Yale as well, and Lovejoy's collection has several nice pieces that keep the Yale connection strong. This volume comes from the collection of Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, who was a passionate book collector as well as a renowned biologist. His collection recently came to auction near Washington DC, as we were fortunate to purchase a portion of it, which we're proud to offer here. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the half title page:"To PatMoynihan, with warm regards, Dillon Ripley." Laid in also is Ripley's card. Moynihan was a four-term US Senator from NY from 1977 to 2001 who, among other many other activities and accomplishments, served for a stint as the chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. Earlier, as a counselor to President Richard Nixon, he also wrote an incredibly on-the-mark memo to Congress in 1969 about the dangers of carbon dioxide to climate change--a very early public alarm that it seems is seldom recognized in the sweep of climate change advocacy. Sidney Dillon Ripley was an ornithologist, a wildlife conservationist, and for twenty years the Secretary of the Smithsonian, leading the charge to reinvigorate and expand the institution. He was an expert on rails (the waterfowl) and birds in Asia. He was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom. This title was his primary book for a lay (non-ornithological) audience, and it explores the value and changing emphases of museums from many angles. The first chapter is entitled "The Collecting Instinct," germane of course also to our various bibliophilic (and biophilic) pursuits. A very good or better book with some light soiling to black cloth boards. A "Surplus 1 --Library of Congress Duplicate" stamp is on the verso of the rear endpaper. A very good jacket with rubbing/discoloration to pale rear panel and short tears to top and bottom of back flap fold. A nice association. .
