Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. pp. [4],7-106,[1](Advertisement) + Woodcut frontis plate of an Indian Brahmin. Woodcut vignette on title (a book peddler?); and another at the end (farmer at his plow). Foxed and age stained. 12mo. 155 mm. Original full leather binding. The printer's name is from the advertisement leaf. The first part of this famous work is by Robert Dodsley (1703-1764), but was sometimes attributed to P.D. Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield; the second part is attributed to John Hill (1714?-1775). On the verso of the last leaf is an eight line manuscript mourning poem, apparently first from Watts, and penned by John Long. "She was my guide, my friend, my earthly love." This book also has numerous early American ownerships, including: Philip Gloeninger, Jr. (1788-1816) from Lebanon, PA, Gloninger was a very prominent minister in the Reformed Church, and a scion of an important and influential patriot family; James Reed (1770-1850); and several others.
