8vo. 11 volumes, set. First editions thus. Original various-coloured cloth, gilt. All but two in acetate or printed jackets. Top edges stained to match the cloth and/or the jacket. Illustrated by John Tenniel, Robert Micklewright, Charles Mozley, Margery Gill, Barry Driscoll, Susan Einzig, Edward Ardizzone & Aubrey Beardsley. Volumes 1 and 4 are without their acetate jackets. The jackets of volumes 7 & 8 are price-clipped. The last three volumes are a little faded on the spines and the laminate is lifting in places along the bottom edge of volume 10. Volume 8 is rubbed at the head of the spine where there is also a creased tear extending to the back panel but repaired with tape on the verso. With these exceptions noted, the books are mostly fine/near fine in near fine d/ws. A complete set of the Nonesuch Press Cygnets. Some of the last books to be published by the press and setting new standards for children's book design. Uncommon.
