First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 155 Pages. The first three o four pages are beginning to loosen but beyond that is a tight clean book with no marks or stamps. This book is a photographic chronicle of Carlsbad Cavern from the days when it was nothing but a treasure trove for fertilizer companies, to the beginning of modern times. Included is just enough text for the reader to follow the action. It is not a definitive history. The photographs and text presented here are from two different sources, traditions, and perceptions. Hometown contacts provided an unexcelled knowledge of local lore of earlier days, although there are so many versions that no one knows them all. Contents in Six Chapters: Cowboys and Indians and Lots of Guano, One Man's Dream, Flares and Flashes, The High Falootin' Perfesser, Toward the Present Day, and Such Stuff As Dreams are Made Of.

Photograph
No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Two original black & white photographs of Carlsbad Caverns, printed on lightly textured photo paper, measuring 14 by 10 inches, taken in the 1930s by Robert Nymeyer. Both identified on their versos in pencil. The first is of 'The base of the Giant / New Cave'. Two figures stand at the base of the stalagmite, one is suggested to be Jim White; the other looks very like Elizabeth Lee in 30s attire. She was an early and important female caver. White was the discoverer and later promoter of the cave. The second photo is also identified in pencil as The Giant. 'World's tallest free standing stalagmite. 90 feet tall. New or Guadalupe Cavern, Slaughter Canyon, Guadalupe Mts. Carlsbad N.M.' This one is signed on the verso in pencil by Robert Nymeyer. The two were given in 1971 to Chuck Pease by James and Inez Wright. Magnificent images.
