Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [good solid copy, minor bumping to top corners, gilt lettering on spine and front cover still bright; one-time owner's name and reading-note-to-self on ffep, some pencil underlining and occasional brief notations (also in pencil) in the text]. Sponsored by the National Federation of Settlements (and with an introduction by Jane Addams, its first president), this volume grew out a study that was "undertaken immediately upon the formation" of the organization in 1911. It was designed to gather information from settlement houses throughout the country related to the social and emotional challenges faced by women (particularly adolescent girls) who had been more or less compelled to enter the workforce out of economic necessity, and were having difficulties meeting "the general moral uncertainty of the age [and] the serious moral problems forced upon them by the reorganization of their sphere of life through its invasion by modern industry." A great deal of attention is devoted to examining such topics as "Inadequate Home Life as a Cause of Moral Strain" and "The Morality of Sex," with various prescriptive solutions offered in the areas of recreation, education, club work, etc.
