Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped.xiv + 221 pages. Foreword by Captain Morin Scott. Based on Edward Beck's diaries. Edward Beck was the author's maternal grandfather's uncle, and was a watch-keeper officer on merchant sailing ships trading in the 1820's. He made voyages to Quebec, the Antipodes and Calcutta. Besides the problems of seamanship his duties included victualling and rationing, which in voyages lasting five months or more could be difficult, as his diaries show. As well as keeping routine watches, he had to help the paying passengers and see to their welfare. In port, Beck had the job of supervising many of the tasks of repairing or replacing worn and damaged rigging. A vivid picture of what a seaman's life in a trading ship was like in the 1820's. 12 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
