Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. An updated edition of a memoir originally printed in 1902, edited here by Patricia W. Romero with footnotes, and with an introduction by Willie Lee Rose. It contains the memoirs of a woman freed as a slave during the Civil War fight for Fort Pulaski outside of Savannah, Georgia. She eventually served as a laundress to a black regiment formed in South Carolina, also helping to teach some of the soldiers to read and write, as well as cleaning and loading their guns. She married a sergeant in the regiment. Her husband died after the war, and after teaching for a short time in the south, she eventually went north working as a servant. She formed a chapter of the Women's Relief Corps to continue to help army soldiers later in life. Listed as Seventh Printing, 1999. In very good condition, except for some changes to the cover color along and near the spine, apparently from sun exposure. 5½ x 8½ inches, 154 pages.
