Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Champaign-Urbana: University of Illinois, 1968. Second edition, revised and expanded (pp. 389, index). Octavo (23.5 cm) in brown cloth with complimentary pictorial dust jacket. An update of the first edition published in 1943, twenty-five years previous. The geographical, historical and cultural border here is the Mississippi, more or less (For convenience, Texas is moved east of the river). Includes many apparently ephemeral journalistic pieces as well as the more enduring works (of Downing, for example). Its scope, however, does not admit Olmsted's tour of the slave states, which, while not narrowly addressed to architectural matters, certainly was relevant to the culture in which the architecture grew. A fine copy in a very good dust jacket (minor wear to the extremities) in protective Brodart sleeve.
