Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Dulac, Edmond; Rachel Rosenthal (illustrator). 1st Edition. The first English language edition (1952), revised and translated from the French Memoires d'un chercheur de perles (1949) by Herma Briffault. Original gilt-titled black cloth attractively decorated with multi-coloured dots, in colour illustrated jacket. Book fine, lightly bumped to the spine ends with pages tanning slightly; jacket good, unclipped in clear removable protector with chip to spine head, and wear with minor loss along the edges. "The career of Leonard Rosenthal makes a dazzling chapter in the romantic history of the pearl. He made the acquaintance of the jewel as a penniless immigrant boy in Paris. In less than 20 years he built a fortune of over $100,000,000 and won the world monopoly of the pearl trade for France. At one time 60,000 divers in the Persian Gulf alone drew the sustenance from him. In his earlier career he dealt only in Oriental pearls. In 1913 he sued the Japanese merchants who were flooding the European market with artificially produced pearls" (jacket blurb).
