The SS Great Britain, launched in 1844, is a unique ship, since she not only played a major part in the transition from sail to steam, but also set the stage for a century of ship development. She was the first iron ship, the largest yet built, and the first to be driven by screw propulsion. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the significance of her construction has been likened to the current `Concorde' project in scope and achievement. But apart from her significance in the evolution of naval architecture, her story provides a fascinating insight to many aspects of mid-Victorian England. Her active career covered a period of consolidation of the Industrial Revolution at home and the expansion of British trade and influence overseas. There are today thousands of Australians whose forefathers travelled in her as emigrants, and the predecessors of soldiers in many famous regiments sailed in her to the Crimea, and to India at the time of the Mutiny. Eventually, her engines old and outdated, the Great Britain worked her last days under sail, only to be laid up in the Falkland Islands as a wool store. But this was not to be the end of her career, for in the summer of 1970, 127 years after she was first launched, she was salvaged and brought home to Bristol, to be restored and fitted out as a museum. Size: 8vo.
