When war engulfs a nation, the need for artistic sustenance becomes greater than ever. The credo of Beauty and Truth, which is poetry, must not be neglected." Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed on the title page ( 'Best wishes, Sydney' ). Once listed, this will be the Only copy of this book for sale on the Internet, signed or unsigned. You can see the light green covers in the photos. They are very clean. The color has faded somewhat at the top and side margins of the front cover. There's also a slight indent on the front cover a little bit above the poet's first name. That same light indent is visible on approximately the first half of the pages. It's not much of anything. I don't see any other wear of any significance on the covers. There is a teeny tiny nick at the top edge of the spine. The book has French flaps. The flaps are in excellent shape, very clean. The front flap has the same red lettering is the cover. The lettering in both places is quite bright and unworn. The binding is stapled and very solid from cover to cover. The covers are nicely tight as well. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any soiling at all. There are no corner creases. There are no markings. No attachments. And the author's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere. 'Sydney King Russell (1897-1976) grew up in New Jersey and attended the University of California, Berkeley. An internationally known poet and editor and member the Poetry Society of America, Russell's work was published in The New Yorker, Poetry, The American Mercury, and The Christian Science Monitor, among other publications. He was founder and editor of the Poetry Chap-Book from 1942 to 1953 and co-editor of Voices Magazine. Additionally, Russell was also a well-known composer and member of American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). In 1944, he won The Kimball Award for the best concert song, "Harbor Night," and his songs were recorded by John Charles Thomas, Lawrence Tibbett, Nelson Eddy, Hilde Gueden, Frances Yeend, Jean Madeira, and Igor Gorin. Reviewers of Russell?s poetry praised his lyrical verse, noted his "allegiance to the timelessness of song," and compared his comic light verse to that of Ogden Nash.'. Signed by Author(s).
